Piravom record polling: 86.3% turnout

piravom election Piravom: Heavy polling trend that was witnessed in the morning continued till 5 in the evening. Piravom has registered a record polling percentage of 80.23% at 5pm breaking the 2001 election turn out.The constituency had witnessed a 79.51-percent voter turnout in the 2001 election. Though the polling was supposed to conclude at 5 this evening the time has been extended to permit those standing in the serpentine queue to cast their votes.

Edakkattuvayal panchayat that registered 86.62 % has topped the list. Maneedu panchayat with more than 83. 5 per cent was next in the list. In Chottanikkara  panchayat 76%, Thiruvangkulam panchayat 74%, Mulanthuruthi 73% and  Pambakuda 80% of its electorate exercised their franchise. The election has been peaceful and no untoward activity was sighted at any booth. The candidates cast their vote this morning and visited the voters at various other booths. In this decisive election UDF candidate Anoop Jacob, LDF candidate MJ Jacob and BJP candidate KR Rajagopal are among the nine contenders for power. Counting of votes would be held on March 21.Piravam has a total of 1.83,493 voters. There are 93,245 women and 89,925 male voters.

The bypoll was necessitated following the death of former Food and Civil supplies minister, TM Jacob, father of Anoop Jacob. With his death, the UDF strength in the 140-member assembly has gone down to 71, while in the LDF camp, the recent resignation of Neyyatinkara MLA, Selvraj (CPM), has reduced its strength to 67. The by-election is as important as the 2011 assembly polls, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance scraped through with a wafer thin majority, which enabled Oommen Chandy to form the new government.
