Puducherry police force to be strengthned

rangaswamyPuducherry: Facing shortage of manpower in police department, the Puducherry government has decided to recruit 1,000 personnel by this year end, Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Assembly on Friday.

The government was aware that there was shortage of policemen and steps had been taken to strengthen the force, he told G Nehru (AINRC) and Ohm Sakthi Segar (AIADMK) during the Question Hour of the House.Once the additional personnel were recruited, the requirements of all police stations would be met, he said.

Opening of outposts and also police booths at various centres would also be considered by the government, the chief minister added. An official source said that the Union Territory presently has around 2,500 police personnel at constable level, besides around 1,000 attached to the India Reserve Battalion (IRB).

To another question by P Purushothaman (AIADMK), Welfare and Tourism Minister P Rajavelu said a detailed plan had been sent to the Centre for development of the sprawling Ousteri lake here as part of tourism promotion projects. Amenities for tourists and recreationary activities, including a boat house, would be set up under the development project of the lake and funds for the same would be sought from the Housing Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), he said.
