Puthur custodial death: DySP Jayakumar as new probe officer

puthur-custodial-deathKochi:  DySP Jayakumar of CBI Chennai unit will be handed over the charge of investigating into the custodial death of Sampath, the prime accused in the Puthur Sheela murder case. The Central Bureau of Investigation will approach the Supreme Court seeking permission to change the investigating officer and to appoint DySP Jayakumar as new probe officer. The CBI had made such a decision following the alleged suicide of DySP Haridath (52), who was investigating the Sampath death case. Mr Haridath’s body was found hanging at his home.

Initially the case was being inquired by inspector S Unnikrrishnan. However after his house was attacked by few goondas the case was handed over to DySP Haridath. During the investigation into the custodial death case, Haridath had given several reports against top police officials like Vijay Sakhare and Muhammed Yasin, who were named as 15 and 16 in the case. The then Chief Judicial Magistrate had ordered the CBI to give the investigating officers guns and CRPF protection.

This order was based on Mr Haridath’s report. However, citing technical difficulties,  the CRPF were unwilling to take up the protection of the investigating officers. The CBI itself at several occasions denounced the findings of DySP Haridath, which is said to have destroyed him emotionally.
