President abandons assassins: clemency submitted before Jaya

Jayalalithaa- TN CMChennai: Even as the day for the implementation of the death sentence nears, Rajiv Gandhi assassins pleaded today to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa to intervene in the matter.  Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan are to face the death row on September 9, 2011. The three convicts lodged in central prison here handed over their appeal addressed to the Chief Minister to the jail authorities, police said.

A communication from the President’s Secretariat rejecting their clemency petitions reached the Vellore prison authorities last night. Reports said authorities at Vellore jail have fixed their execution on September 9. The three convicts lodged in central prison here handed over their appeal addressed to the Chief Minister to the jail authorities, police said.

The death sentences of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan were confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2000. The capital punishment of the fourth convict Nalini was, however, commuted to life by the apex court. The three men and Nalini belonged to LTTE and were convicted of assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991.

MDMK chief Vaiko today met the convicts in Vellore jail this morning. One of their advocates Pugazhendhi said they “would soon decide on the next plan of action”.
