Rajya Sabha adjourned over Sri Lankan issue

rajya-sabhaNew Delhi: The Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari was forced to adjourn the House till noon; however, as soon as the House reconvened at noon, it was again adjourned till 2 pm. The house was adjourned after the DMK and AIADMK with the support from Left created ruckus in the upper house over the government’s stand on a resolution against Sri Lanka in the UN Human Rights Council session to be held in Geneva.

The DMK and AIADMK have demanded that the government must support a resolution moved by US, France and Norway in the UNHRC against the alleged atrocities committed on Sri Lankan Tamils.

“We want an assurance from the government that India will vote against Sri Lanka. We want an answer from him. Please open your silence, Mr PM,” said one of the DMK MP’s in the Rajya Sabha. “India knows everything that happened in Sri Lanka. What is the stand of our government on this issue?” asked the Left’s D Raja.

Responding to the questions posed Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal said, “As of now we do not know what the resolution is. I will get in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs and get a statement issued.” The government said it will fix a time for a formal discussion on the matter.  This assurance from Mr Basal did not pacify the members of the house.

DMK members displayed banners and walked into the well of the house. V Maitreyan (AIADMK) said the Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution asking the Centre to take up the issue of war crimes committed by Sri Lanka with the UN. T K Rangarajan (CPI-M) said a credible inquiry committee should be formed to look into atrocities committed against Sri Lankan Tamils.
