Renowned novelist Kakkanadan passes away

kakkanadanKollam: Prominent Malayalam novelist George Varghese Kakkanadan passed away at a private hospital at Kollam this morning. Kakkanadan as he was fondly called by many was suffering from liver related ailments and had been under treatment for the past few years. He had been hospitalised for the past fortnight. Yesterday evening his condition became critical and he passed away at 8.15 am.

George Varghese Kakkanadan was born in Thiruvalla on 23 April1935 . He laid the foundation of modernism in Malayalam Literature. Ushnamekhala, Vasoori, Japana Pukayila, Kakkanadante Priyakathakal, Saakshi, Orotha, Pralayathinushesham, Ezham Mudra, Kozhi, Kalapazhakkam were some of his celebrated works. ‘Kachavadam’ was his first short story that was published in 1963.

This book was released by his friends while he was in Delhi. The Malayala Nadu Cherukadha Puraskaram for his work ‘Yudhavasanam’ was the first award he received. He had won the Kerala Sahithya Akademi award for his novel “Orodha” in 1984. In 2005 he won the Kendra Sahithya Akademi Award and in 2008 he was bestowed with the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Fellowship.  He was also awarded the Balamaniyamma Award, Muttathuwarki Award and the Pathmaprabha  Puraskaram.

Unfortunately, the author could not complete his dream project, “Kshathriyen” novel,  which still remains unfinished. Kakkanadan was 76 and is survived by his wife Ammini, two sons and a daughter. The date for the funeral is yet to be decided.
