Sanjeev Bhatt arrested

sanjeev-bhatAhmedabad: The suspended Gujarat cadre IPS officer who shot into limelight after claiming being present at a meeting of chief minister Narendra Modi on the night after the Godhra train carnage in 2002, Sanjiv Bhatt, was arrested on friday night after a police constable filed an FIR against him. He was arrested by cops of his own force who later raided his Ahmedabad home.

The arrest comes two days after IPS officer had filed an affidavit in Supreme Court against the Gujarat government and the Gujarat Chief Minister on the 2002 riots. The affidavit linked Modi and former home minister Amit Shah with the murder of BJP leader Haren Pandya.

Bhatt was held on a complaint filed by constable K D Pant accusing the IPS officer of abducting him and forcibly recording his statement. The officer was detained at 4.15pm from his house in Memnagar in the heart of Ahmedabad.

Constable K D Pant, who had worked under Bhatt during the 2002 riots, in his FIR accused the IPS officer of threatening a public servant, fabricating false evidence and wrongful confinement. He alleged that the anti- Modi officer had threatened and forced him to sign a “false” affidavit that the IPS officer was present at a high- level meeting called by Gujarat Chief Minister on the night of February 27, 2002 after the Godra train carnage.

Bhatt, however, refused to comment on the arrest saying, “I cannot say anything right now as I am in police custody. It is not the right time. If I want I can say lot of things but would not like to comment. It is now for media to decide what is right and what is wrong.”
