Shahid Balwa granted bail

shahid-balwaNew Delhi: A Delhi court today granted bail to Swan Telecom Promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, an accused in the 2G case. The court had reserved its order on Mr Balwa’s bail plea after hearing arguments earlier today. The CBI had informed the Delhi court that it would not oppose the bail plea of Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa in the 2G case keeping in view the Supreme Court and High Court orders granting bail to other co-accused in the case.

“As an officer of this court, considering the umbrella charges with individual charges framed against the accused, we are not opposing the bail plea at this juncture in view of the Supreme Court and High Court orders,” Special Public Prosecutor U U Lalit told Special CBI judge O. P. Saini. The charges framed against Mr Balwa are similar to those against co-accused and Swan Telecom Director Vinod Goenka, who has been granted bail by the Supreme Court, he added.

The High Court has reserved its order on bail plea of Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa bail plea in the 2G spectrum scam case for 2.30pm. Advocate Vijay Aggarwal, appearing for Mr Balwa, said his client was the only private person who was still in judicial custody.  He cited the High Court order granting bail to Ms Kanimozhi and four others, to drive home the point that bail was the rule and the court should consider that an accused was innocent until proven guilty.

The CBI had arrested the Mumbai-based realty promoter in February. The Enforcement Directorate had trailed Rs 214 crore allegedly routed by Balwa and DB Realty to Chennai-based Kalaignar television, a channel promoted by family members of DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.
