Soumya murder case verdict today

soumyaThrissur: The Thrissur fast track court would declare the verdict on the Soumya abuse and murder case today. 23 year old Soumya who hails from Manjakade, Shornur was raped and murdered in the Shornur passenger train immediately after it left the Vallathol Nagar railway station. Fast Track court Judge K N Raveendra Babu will deliver the judgement, Special Prosecutor A Sureshan said.

30-year-old Govindachamy, the single accused,  hailing from Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu is alleged to have assaulted Soumya in the ladies compartment of the Kochi-Shornur Passenger train on February 1 and pushed her out of the running train immediately after it left the Vallathol Nagar railway station. Govindachamy is an accused in innumerable number of cases.

The petition filed by Malayala Vedi, against the statement given by forensic assisstant professor Dr  A K Unmesh, in defence of the accused and the petition filed by Govindachamy against Dr Sherli will also be submitted before court today. The trial that began on June 6, 2011 ended on last Tuesday.

She was on her way home at Manjakad near Shornur after attending office at Ernakulam. Govindachamy was arrested on February 3 from Palakaad. Soumya had succumbed to injuries at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital on February 6. Charges against Govindachamy were framed under various IPC sections including 302 (Murder) and 376 (Rape).

The prosecutor pleaded for capital punishment to the accused considering it a”rarest of rare case in the light of the scientific and circumstantial evidence produced before the court. Out of a total of 154 witnesses, statements of 82 were recorded before the court. Besides, 105 documents, 43 pieces of evidence were also produced before the court pressing for the capital punishment to the accused, Prosecutor said.
