Speaker revokes Justice Soumitra Sens impeachment

soumitra-senNew Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar has revoked the impeachment of Justice Soumitra Sen after seeking the views of all the representatives of government and political parties. Justice Sen had resigned last week, in a bid to avoid being removed, and his resignation was accepted by President Pratibha Patil.

The Government had taken the unusual step of notifying the resignation of Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court, strengthening speculation that the impeachment proceedings against him in the Lok Sabha scheduled for Monday may be dropped. Justice Sen’s resignation after he had been impeached by the Rajya Sabha last month and just ahead of similar proceedings in the Lok Sabha had created a piquant situation for the Government.

The impeachment proceedings are intended to remove a judge from the post. But once he has resigned one cannot remove him and thus the impeachment proceedings if furthered would have become infructuous.
