Spurned lover kills lady love

Coimbatore: A youth repeatedly stabbed a final year BE Computer Science girl with a knife on the campus of the reputable Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT),  after she allegedly spurned his love proposal.

The victim R Rini Tapasya, a hosteller, was walking towards her classroom along with four of her classmates around 8.45 a.m. when the 23-year old assailant X Arun Prasanna grabbed her by the hair and attacked her repeatedly with a knife. Her classmates fainted on seeing Rini bleeding profusely.

On hearing the screams of the girls, fellow students, staff and security personnel tried to nab Arun. However, he tried to keep them at bay by slashing his wrist but was later overpowered by the staff.

“Everything happened in a matter of seconds when students were coming into the college. Suddenly, we heard a loud scream in front of the Computer Technology Block and found a youth brandishing a knife. We chased and caught him near the open auditorium,” a security guard said.

Rini, who sustained deep cut injuries on her chest and stomach and minor injuries on her elbow and shoulders, is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a private hospital near the CIT where she was admitted by staff and students. Doctors said her liver was damaged due to the deep cut she suffered on her stomach.

According to police, Arun and Rini, both hailing from Dindigul, had studied in the same school. “Arun has been proposing to Rini since school days and he repeatedly used to send her SMS messages to which she did not respond. He even used to accost her in the college often. Angered at being spurned, he attacked her with a knife,” Inspector Jeevanantham, who is investigating the case, said.

Arun had dropped out of an arts and science college in Dindigul where he was pursuing a BBA programme.

Curiously, there were two versions about how Arun was nabbed. College authorities said that he had himself dialed the police control room (100) from his mobile phone asking them to rush an ambulance and was later caught by the staff. However, police said he was nabbed near the Chitra Signal after he escaped from the CIT campus.

A case of attempt to murder (307 IPC) was registered against him and he has been remanded in judicial custody.
