Sri Lankan refugee case: 2 more under arrest

tamil-refugeesKochi: Two more persons attempting to cheat Sri Lankan Tamils were caught by the police here today. News channels state that there are speculations regarding their involvement with the LTTE, which however has not been confirmed or clarified. A team from Q-Branch, the intelligence wing of Tamil Nadu Police, will arrive in Kerala to interrogate the refugees and their status shall be decided here after.

Police sources said that thirty-seven refugees from different camps in Tamil Nadu, including four women and four children, were rescued from Kothamangalam and Thadiyittaparambu in Kerala. Police sources said they were staying in a rented house.

The refugees, mostly from Mandapam camp in Tamil Nadu, had come in batches. Some of the refugees arrived nearly a week ago and some a couple of day’s back. The frauds had demanded between Rs. 2 and 4 lakh from the refugees.

The initial police investigations prove that the refugees were cheated after promising them to be transported to Australia. They were promised to be taken out on a fishing vessel. The owner of the fishing vessel, Sareesh from Munambam, and another person named Antony, who acted as middleman for selling the vessel, were arrested today (Tuesday).

Yesterday (Monday) five Sri Lankans and four locals were arrested for attempting to cheat the refugees.
