Thekkady boat tragedy: KTDC held responsible

boat tragedyThiruvananthapuram: The Justice E Moideen Kunju final report on the Thekkady boat tragedy that resulted in the death of 45 persons on September 30, 2009 was submitted here today. The judicial commission found that, defect in the designing of the boat was one of the prime reasons for the tragedy. As per the 232 page report, the boat which was purchased by KTDC from a Chennai company for Rs 40 lakh under the guidance of Tourism department, had certain structural defaults.

The combined effect of  defective boat, overloading and an inexperienced driver had caused the tragedy. The report said, that the boat lacked stability and was overloaded. The driver did not have the required qualification. The commission held the higher officials of Tourism Department, KTDC and others responsible.

The commission submitted a 232 page report with 22 directions on how to prevent accidents.The commission was appointed on May 18, 2010, and it held 31 sittings, examined 122 records and took evidence from 60 witnesses.
