Tourism department award for Le Meridian Kochi selling stale food

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The Le Meridian hotel and convention centre in Kochi, from where stale food was seized in the recent raids, was given the award for the State tourism department’s best five-star deluxe hotel of 2010-11.

Last month, the food safety commissionarate of the health department had conducted raids in hotels all over Kerala after the death of a student in Trivandrum after consuming shawarma. It was in these raids that stale food was seized from Le Meridian also. However within a few days of the raid, the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in a function held at Mascot hotel in Trivandrum announced that the same hotel was being awarded with the title of the best five star hotel. The function was presided over by the tourism minister K.P. Anil Kumar.

Ooomen Chandy had said that tourism is the State’s core area and that the Government’s aim is to go forward by making use of the possibilities in this sector.

However, in the tourism department’s website, nothing is mentioned about the jury members who selected the winners of this award and also the basis on which this particular hotel was selected.

Many other institutions in the tourism sector allege that there is no transparency in inviting entries for the award. They say that they get to know of the award declaration only through the newspapers.

They also allege that for the past many years these awards are being given only to a select group of institutions. The fact that this award does not carry a cash prize is being cited as one of the reasons for the lack of complaints from the general public. But the institutions which win these awards use it to their advantage through advertisements and other promotional purposes.

KTDC Chairman Vijayan Thomas, Tourism secretary Suman Billa, Director Rani George and Confederation of Kerala Tourism Industries President E.M. Najeeb were present at the awards function.

The award for the best heritage hotel in Kerala was won by the Coconut lagoon in Kumarakom, the award for best five star hotel by the Gateway hotel in Ernakulam (Cochin), the best four star hotel by Taj Vivanta and the best three star hotel award by the Marari Beach in Alappuzha.

The transfer of the Marad Municipality Secretary Jayakumar to Chengannur, a day after stale food items were seized from star hotels in Ernakulam had raised a storm at that time. Stale food items were seized from Le Meridein, White Fort and Sarovaram and their names were displayed outside the Corporation building.

Till now, no officer had the courage to raid these start hotels and seize food items. It was alleged during that time that many from the higher ups were involved in the transfer of the officer, just a day after the raid.
