Tourism suffers due to Mullaperiyar agitation

mullaperiyar-damThiruvananthapuram: The tension in Kerala Tamil Nadu border over the Mullaperiyar dam issue has taken a toll on Kerala’s tourism industry. Reservation desks have been receiving more than the usual share of cancellations. The most affected tourist sites are Thekkady and Kumily. Industry sources also have confirmed the sharp decline in tourist flow.

The recent attack on tourists at Theni, Cumbom and Madurai have worsened the situation. Tour operators have decided to stop promoting Thekkady and Madurai till the situation becomes more favourable. Several tourists had to suffer at the border. Tourists visiting Thekkady and going to Madurai from there and vice-versa are having a difficult time.

Recently, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had to intervene to bring back the five member family of Umesh from Choozhampala here that got stranded at Theni en route from Kodaikanal after they were attacked by protestors. The Kerala government has now set up a control room at Kumily to help stranded Keralities across the border.
