Women legislators to hit the gym

gymChennai: The 14 women MLAs in the state have a reason to smile. Between attending sessions and looking into constituency work, the legislators can now work out at the new gymnasium at the MLA hostel in Chennai. Much to the delight of the women legislators, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday launched the gym dedicated for their use.

Set up at a cost of Rs 16 lakh, the gym has two treadmills, a new generation bicycle, a twister, an elliptical cross trainer and an electrical body massager. Several women MLAs, including Ministers B. Valarmathi and Gokula Indira and CPM’s Bala Bharathi and Congress’s Vijayadharini thanked the chief minister in the assembly for the gesture.

“It is a very good thing,” Ms Balabharathi later told a tabloid. “For women, health is a very important thing and we are glad this initiative has been taken to help us maintain our health amid our busy schedules.” Ms Vijayadharini said the gym was a fantastic innovation. “We really needed this, and when I thanked the chief minister I did so from my heart. It has fully digitized EFX machines, audio systems and what not,” gushes Ms Vijayadharini.

In 2009, the then deputy CM M.K. Stalin had opened a gym at the Omandurar government estate for the benefit of all the legislators. Though the gym was opened on demand from the MLAs, it is said that it is locked most of the time as, reportedly, nobody was using it. The women legislators promise to put the gym to good use. Soon, we might see fitter women in the house.
